Aerospace Tube
Kaiser Aluminum offers tube products tailored for the aerospace and high-strength market. Tube can be created from the following alloy selections:
2024, 7075, 7050, 7068, 6061
2024
This alloy is heavily utilized in aircraft applications because it has good machining characteristics and higher strength than either 2014 and 2017. Though cold formability is considered fair, it is one of the most popular alloys for cold heading and thread rolling applications as a result of the superior grain structure that can be obtained. Corrosion resistance and anodizeablilty are only fair. It is also the basic alloy for cold finished square and rectangular bar. Again, this is because of its high strength and good machinability, which are essential for precision fittings and parts.
7075
This alloy offers the highest strength of the common screw machine alloys. The superior stress corrosion resistance of the T173 and T7351 tempers makes it a logical replacement for 2024, 2014 and 2017 in many of the most critical applications. The T6 and T651 tempers have fair machinability, resistance welding and corrosion resistance ratings. This alloy is heavily utilized by the aircraft and ordnance industries because of its superior strength.
7050
This alloy is used in aircraft structural parts. The alloy has characteristics of high strength coupled with good resistance to exfoliation and stress corrosion cracking. The alloy also has good fracture toughness and fatigue resistance.
7068
Offers some of the highest strength mechanical properties available in an extruded product. Intended for aerospace, ordinance and light weight recreational applications where extremely high strength is required. Property levels are typically in the 100 ksi range for ultimate strengths.
Generally selected where welding or brazing is required or for its high corrosion resistance in all tempers. Formability is excellent in O temper and good in the T4 temper. Machining is more difficult when compared to the other machining alloys. Corrosion resistance and appearance after anodizing are superior.
